Dance Studio Owner’s have to do lists a mile long. There is so much to do, day in and day out, with only so many hours in a day. (I started making a list of what DSO’s are in charge of but it was so long it would take up the entire article!!) With a ‘to do list’ a mile long, how do you get everything done? We all know the answer is to delegate! Delegating can be hard for some of us, but it can also be one of the most important thing you can do for your business and for your sanity.
By letting go and having others help us, we are able to focus on the big picture and the overall success of our business. “I lead people, priorities, and projects — in that order — and the work will get done because the right people are focused on the right tasks.” (Source: ‘To Be a Great Leader, You Have to Learn How to Delegate Well’ by Jess Sostrin in the Harvard Business Review ) This is a great article as it not only discusses the importance of delegating but how to do it successfully.
I recently listened to a podcast discussing how we need to let go in order to succeed. In Rhee Gold’s DanceLife Podcast, Season 2, Episode 4: Letting Go of Control, Stacey and Rhee discuss taking your "to do list" and making a “stop doing list” which is an amazing idea!! To determine which jobs to delegate; Stacey recommends going through all your jobs and deciding which take up too much of your time, jobs can be done by someone else, and my personal favorite, which jobs you don't like!
For the over worked and over stressed DSO, I highly recommend taking the time to ask yourself if someone else can do one of your many jobs or projects and to get started on your ’stop doing list’ today!
